Grand Canyon Vacation

Everyone should experience a Grand Canyon vacation once in their lifetime.  The Grand Canyon is a giant, 277 mile long gorge that was formed over six million years ago by the Colorado River.  Since the early part of the 20th century, the Grand Canyon has been a national park.  Each year, millions of visitors from all over the world visit Arizona to see this scenic wonder.

The color and the beauty of this natural wonder are only two reasons to visit the Grand Canyon National Park.  Besides the abundant natural history throughout the area, there is quite a bit of recent history throughout the area, both Native American as well as that of the opulence of the 20th century.

There are many options for your Grand Canyon vacation.  Hotels adorn the Southern Rim of the Canyon.  One hotel, the El Tovar Hotel, dates back to 1905 and still maintains the splendor of that ear.  In addition to the historical architecture of the building, there are also gift shops and a restaurant in the hotel.

If you are seeking Native American souvenirs as well as fossils, you can find what you are looking for at Lookout Studio, located at the Southern Rim and build in 1914.  Designer Mary Jane Colter was an enthusiast of natural beauty as well as the Native American culture and designed many of the buildings on the Southern Rim that still exist for tourists today.

Whether you just want to view the canyon from the Southern Rim and take advantage of the many different historical buildings and sites, or you wan to venture into the valley of the Grand Canyon, a Grand Canyon vacation can provide you with anything you want.

A Grand Canyon vacation is one of the few places you can visit that literally has something for everyone.  The adventure seeker will enjoy the different activities offered in the canyon such as the following:

Ÿ  Camping

Ÿ  White river rafting

Ÿ  Hiking

Ÿ  Mule rides

Ÿ  Fishing

Those who want a more sedate holiday can stay at one of  the hotels along the Southern Rim, including the historic El Tovar and enjoy the historic buildings as well as the souvenir shopping that is rife throughout the Southern Rim.

If you just want an opportunity to take some of the most breathtaking photos that you can imagine, you may wish to take an air flight, either by helicopter or small plane, over the Grand Canyon.  One of the few landmarks that is actually visible from outerspace, the Grand Canyon is truly something to see by air.  You can take a helicopter tour or an airplane tour of the area and even surrounding areas of beauty, if your budget allows.

If you choose to take a walking path down to the valley of the canyon along one of the many trails, make sure you bring a backpack and plenty of water.  Stop for frequent breaks.  Many hikers are rescued by park officials each year as they are overcome with exhaustion and the effects of the difference in both temperature and elevation from the outer rim to the valley.

Camping is possible in the valley if you obtain a camping permit beforehand.  Each year, about 30,000 people spend the night in the valley of the Grand Canyon.

No matter what type of holiday you are seeking for yourself or your family, a Grand Canyon vacation is unique in that it has something for everyone.
